The Portland Timbers are officially done with Concacaf Champions League play, which means they can focus solely on their opponents in MLS. What better opponent to mark the beginning of that shift than the team that hails from the fishing village up north? That’s right, we’re getting an early Cascadia showdown at Providence Park with the Seattle Sounders coming to town.
The Sounders have looked good to start the year. There was talk that they could experience a down year, but that has not been the case so far. Instead, they’re 2-0-1 (W-L-D) with both of those wins coming by multiple goals. They beat Minnesota United by four goals and LA Galaxy by three. They also tied LAFC 1-1.
So this iteration of the Sounders is seemingly pretty good. That’s a tough matchup for the Timbers, especially when it comes at the tail end of a stretch that has seen four games in 12 days. Will the Timbers opt for some rotation and give some guys rest after a long two weeks? Or will they go all in to set the tone for the rest of the season? Will find out in just a bit.
