For the first time ever, the Portland Timbers are headed to Austin, TX for a matchup against expansion side Austin FC. It’s exciting for many reasons, but the big two that pop to mind are a) we’ll hopefully get to see Matthew McConaughey work his “Minister of Culture” magic and b) it’s the first matchup EVER between these two sides. First matches are always exciting!
Let’s just hope this trip to Texas goes just slightly better than the last one. When the Timbers went to Houston, they managed a 2-2 draw that felt good, but that was entirely because of a second-half push that ameliorated all problems in the first half. The Timbers could really use three points, especially after coming up short against Minnesota United.
There are many questions heading into this game. Is this Timbers team a contender or a pretender? Can they get a much-needed three points on the road? Will Matthew McConaughey take his shirt off? We’ll find out tonight.
