After putting in a huge performance on Sunday against the Vancouver Whitecaps, it was a given that Donovan Ricketts would be nominated for the Save of the Week. The only question was which of his brilliant saves in the second half would be put up against the dueling Clint Irwin and Michael Gspurning double saves from the Colorado Rapids' 5-1 romp over the Seattle Sounders on Saturday, as well as whatever else the league decided to throw in there (sorry, Joe Bendik and Sean Johnson).
Save 1: Ricketts Double Save
First Ricketts stones Kakuteh Manneh from close range, then gets himself back up to stop Camilo Sanvezzo's followup off the rebound. (MLS does not have individual video of this one, so skip to 2:20 in the highlights.)
Save 2: Ricketts Paws YP Lee's Shot Over
Young-Pyo Lee bring the ball down the Whitecaps right flank before cutting inside before firing a shot on goal. Ricketts, who is screened by two Timbers, gets his hand up quick enough to knock the ball up and over the goal.
Save 3: Ricketts Dives to Deny Manneh
A headed ball falls to Manneh just outside the Timbers box and he volleys it out of the air on goal. Ricketts dives at full stretch and manages to get a hand to the ball, tipping it wide of the post. This is the save nominated for the Save of the Week.
