The Rose City Invitational Has a Name, Details

The Timbers will face two MLS sides and one new foreign club in their preseason tournament.

For the third year in a row the Portland Timbers are hosting a preseason tournament. For the first time the tournament has an official name: the Rose City Invitational. The Timbers will be joined by the San Jose Earthquakes, Vancouver Whitecaps, and Jamaican side Portmore FC.

The tournament, which will again be included in season ticket packages, will run from February 3rd to March 1st in a round-robin format. The Timbers will open the tournament against the Earthquakes on Sunday the 23rd before taking Portmore on Wednesday the 26th and closing out their preseason against Vancouver on Saturday the 1st.

Portmore, following in the footsteps of AIK in 2012 and 2013, will this year's foreign entrant to the Invitational. Portmore is the former club of Donovan Ricketts and currently holds the contract to Alvas Powell while he is on loan to the Timbers. Five time winners of the Jamaican Premier League, currently the Red Strip Premier League, Portmore most recently won the league in the 2011/12 season. Portmore have struggled in the 2013/14 season so far and are currently sitting in last place.

Oddly, Portmore have a fixture scheduled for February 23rd (against the awesomely named Humble Lions). The match is Portmore's final fixture of the season and, with them currently sitting the relegation zone, could be a vital one, leaving a big question as to how they will proceed.

The Vancouver Whitecaps will be the first Cascadian team to take part in the Invitational since its inception as the Portland Timbers Preseason Tournament. The Timbers will also have a chance to play a friendly against the Seattle Sounders during their preseason trip to Arizona, giving fans a chance to preview both match-ups.

The final team in the Invitational, San Jose, are now familiar preseason foes, having been to all three editions of the tournament. In 2012 the Timbers tied San Jose 1-1, then in 2013 the two teams tied again, but this time it was a 3-3 shootout.

The Timbers press release:
