Re-entry Draft Stage 2 Offers Interesting Prospects for the Portland Timbers

With needs to meet and depth to fill, who should the Timbers be looking at in tomorrow's Re-entry Draft?

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

While this year's  version of the MLS Re-entry Draft's first stage was hardly packed with excitement, the second stage promises to see several players taken as teams have free rein to offer players reduced salaries from those that they enjoyed previously.

The Portland Timbers, after making large strides in shaping their roster with a number of moves last week, still have some needs to fill and could look to the Re-entry Draft to flesh out their roster.

Centerbacks

In the draft: Patrick Ianni, Hunter Jumper, Steven Kinney, Bakary Soumare, Marvell Wynne, Nana Attakora, Jeff Parke, Futty Danso, Rauwshan McKenzie, Danny O'Rourke, Aaron Maund

Soumare and Wynne are the two most successful, and well paid, names on this list. Assuming either is willing to take a decent pay cut, either would be an excellent addition to the Timbers' centerback depth chart and should compete for the second or third spot on the roster.

There are other players available who have proved reliable starters in MLS, notably Jeff Parke and Patrick Ianni. Unfortunately, as both players are former Sounders and beloved of the fishing village to the north, they just don't seem like good fits for the Timbers.

Fullbacks

In the draft: Hunter Jumper, Gonzalo Segares, Marvell Wynne, Jair Benitez, James Riley, Bobby Convey, Kosuke Kimura, Rich Balchan, Josh Gardner

Again Wynne stands out here as a desirable pickup. There are a number of other veteran players on this list that could provide cover or challenge for a starting spot in the Timbers' backline at fullback. Segares, Convey, and Gardner are all players who have been around MLS for some time and could be good fits for the Timbers.

For a less potentially expensive piece the Timbers could look to Rich Balchan. Formerly of the Columbus Crew and Real Salt Lake, Balchan looked like a revelation in his rookie year, but has struggled to find playing time since then. If the Timbers can get the most out of the 25-year-old, he could be quite a bargain.

Forwards

In the draft: Edson Buddle, Kamani Hill, Dmitry Imbongo, Omar Cummings, Chandler Hoffman, Andre Akpan, Chandler Hoffman, Tristin Bowen, Dwayne DeRosario, Andrew Weideman

In the most fickle position there are several proven goalscorers in MLS on offer, but none are without their drawbacks. If the Timbers want a more experienced player to fill in their attacking ranks then Edson Buddle, Omar Cummings, or Dwayne DeRosario are possibilities. Cummings, the youngest of the trio at 32, seems to have the most left in the tank after finishing 2014 strong, but coming off several injury filled seasons it is hard to tell how well he could contribute.

What player would you pick in the second stage of the Re-entry Draft? Can any of the Timbers' needs be filled here?
