The Portland Timbers are cutting it a little close as they consider whether to get into the playoffs or not. With both the Seattle Sounders and Sporting Kansas City ahead in the standings, it is up to Timbers to make a move, starting with tonight’s road match against the previously undefeated at home Colorado Rapids.
The Timbers come into this match after getting their first away win of the year mid-week, beating Salvadoran side C.D. Dragon 2-1 on Tuesday. Any scrap of momentum that the Timbers can bring home from that long trip will be helpful as they face the toughest away date in the league.
Of course, as difficult as the Rapids are to beat on their home turf, there is still hope for the Timbers. Colorado are a strong side and difficult to break down, but they have struggled to maintain the absurd form with which they started the season, winning only three of their last fourteen after winning nine out of their first fifteen. Breaking Colorado down will still be a challenge — they have only allowed five goals in fourteen games at home this year — but it is doable and the Rapids have looked decidedly less strong at the back in recent performances, including a 3-3 draw last weekend against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
