The Portland Timbers are now on to game two of the 2016 Simple Invitational and today the home town side are taking on their Cascadian nemeses, the Vancouver Whitecaps. With the Chicago Fire and Minnesota United providing the opening act for the Timbers and 'Caps, the sides that we see on the pitch today in both matches will be very different from those that were featured on Sunday.
For both the Timbers and the Whitecaps, today's match will features the players that did not get time on Sunday, largely those on the fringe of the gameday 18, and players on both sides will come into this one with something to prove. On the Timbers in particular, look to youngsters Neco Brett and Ben Polk in the attack to show that they are real options off the bench to bolster the attack, while Zarek Valentin will have a chance to show off some of the versatility that he was brought in for, lining up at center back for the first time since joining the Timbers over the offseason.
Preview
Who Will the Timbers Field Against the Caps?: "Neco Brett has put in several impressive shifts out wide on the right for the Timbers so far this preseason, including making a substitute appearance on Sunday, and he should line up there again tomorrow. With the reported collapse of the Timbers' Mystery Winger deal, Brett has a better chance than ever to earn a place in the Timbers' 18 where wing depth is a prized commodity."
