Playing their second preseason friendly in preparation for the 2015 NWSL season, the Portland Thorns registered a 2-0 win over FC Tucson Women Wednesday night at the Kino Sports Complex in front of 1,118 fans. Forward Jodie Taylor scored her first goal for her new club and Kelsey Haycook doubled the Thorns lead late in the second half to secure the win.
FC Tucson Women, a new WPSL team, were playing in their first-ever match and held Portland scoreless until the 24th minute. Midfielder Allie Long setup Taylor for the opening goal midway through the first half, with the England international breaking into the box and slotting the ball inside the right post.
The Thorns extended their lead late on, clinching the victory when Haycook scored in the 88th minute, pouncing on a loose ball in the box. The goal marks Haycook's second of preseason following her strike in the 4-0 win over the University of Portland on March 21.
Portland made nine substitutions in the second half, including seven trialists. The Thorns outshot FC Tucson 13-7 with nine on target and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
After traveling to Arizona on Monday for preseason camp, the Thorns will face off against the University of Arizona on Saturday before returning to the Rose City ahead of their April 11 NWSL opener against the Boston Breakers.
