The Portland Timbers are set to wrap up their preseason today with a match against Sporting Kansas City.
After Wednesday’s reserve-side win over the New York Red Bulls, the Timbers should run out their full first team against SKC, giving us a look at the possible starters against the LA Galaxy on March 4th.
The Timbers’ preferred XI has remained constant throughout the preseason, but there are still some wrinkles to be ironed out. Vytas and Marco Farfan remain in contention for the starting left back spot, while Diego Chara has finally made his way back on to the pitch and is regaining his fitness after spending the offseason recovering from a broken foot. What’s more, the integration of new players like Samuel Armenteros, Cristhian Paredes, and Andy Polo into the lineup, or off the bench, remains an ongoing project as Giovani Saravese heads into his first season at the reins of the club.
Kansas City, meanwhile, remain the same Peter Vermes side as ever but with one significant change: the loss of Chara’s best friend, Benny Feilhaber, to expansion side LAFC. Of course, the Timbers’ opponents remain no less hate-able, having picked up former Sounder Brad Evans on the free agent market.
