Major League Soccer announced on Wednesday that the MLS SuperDraft 2021 will take place on Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. PT. Austin FC will get the first pick in the draft. The event will be all virtual and can be streamed on MLSsoccer.com, the MLS app, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

This year’s draft has been condensed from four rounds to three, with Austin getting the first pick in each round. The rest of the picks are determined by the reverse order of the 2020 regular season standings, with the performance of each playoff team also accounted for.

That means that the Portland Timbers have the 16th pick in each round of the SuperDraft. The Timbers finished third in the Western Conference this regular season and lost in the first round to FC Dallas in PKs. In last year’s SuperDraft, the Timbers selected Aaron Molloy, a defensive midfielder who played with Portland Timbers 2 in 2020.
