SFPI MLS Week 25 Power Rankings

#CrappyForeignBeerBrandedManufacturedRivalryWeek is now over! The Scheduling Geniuses at MLS Headquarters put rivalry games at the end of a 3 in 7 or 8-day stretch for most teams just before the September International Break, leading to some subdued matches as everyone was running on tired legs. But I digress. TONS of movement this week as only two teams stayed put. The biggest winner was Columbus Crew, bolting up 6 spots following two home wins against Western Conference foes. The biggest loser was New York Red Bulls dropping 5 following a disappointing home draw to NYC.

COMPONENTS OF SFPI

PERFORMANCE SCORE: 100% determined by results on the field of play.

PPG Score: Total Points Per Game added to Points Per Game over Last Five. Last Five is given more weight, the largest single component of SFPI

Goal Difference Per Game: Overall Goal Difference divided by games played.

Home/Away Bonus: Bonus points awarded for earning results (W/D) on the road. Points subtracted for dropping results (D/L) at home. Accrues over entire season.

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE

Average Performance Scores of all of a teams opponents to date. Accounts for Road games by adding a % of a teams Home PPG to the performance score when played on the road.

TOTAL SCORE: Performance Score is added to Strength of Schedule to create a teams Total Score. Teams are then ranked in order from highest to lowest.

TIMBERS ROOTING INTEREST: Last week was overall a good week in terms of results around the league that allowed Portland to shoot all the way to 2nd in the West (and hold it thanks to SKC and Houston being rescheduled. What I will do is assign each game 1 point, and if that result came out exactly the way Portland needed it to it will get the full point, if it came out 1 result off (so if needed Team X to lose and they drew, or needed a Draw and a team won) it will get half a point. Last week out of 8 games 3 went the way Portland needed, and another one was one result off for 3.5 out of 8 points. This week there is only one match that really matters, and one more that involves the bottom two teams in the conference, but we would want them to draw to keep as much distance between them and us as possible.
