Portland Timbers vs. New York Red Bulls: Preseason Match Thread [1:00]

MLS: New York Red Bulls at Portland Timbers Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

With just one and a half weeks left until opening weekend, the Portland Timbers’ preseason is close to reaching its peak in today’s match against the New York Red Bulls.

The Timbers will be facing off against a Red Bulls side that is primarily comprised of reserves while the New York first team heads to Costa Rica for tomorrow night’s CONCACAF Champions League match against Honduran side CD Olympica.

The Timbers, however, will be looking to get some different looks with their XI, potentially mixing up the starters and giving some of the team’s new arrivals a chance. Of particular note is the possibility that Cristhian Paredes gets a longer run out alongside David Guzman — something which looks all the more likely after Lawrence Olum went the distance against FC Dallas on Saturday. Additionally, today’s match should mark the return of Diego Chara to the pitch for limited minutes after missing most of the preseason while recovering from a broken foot.

New arrivals Andy Polo and Samuel Armenteros, and youngsters like Eryk Williamson and Bill Tuiloma could also play expanded roles in today’s match.
