Portland Timbers at New York Red Bulls: How to Watch, Previews, Match Chat [4:00]

MLS: Portland Timbers at New York Red Bulls Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The Portland Timbers continue their season opening road trip today as they get set to take on the New York Red Bulls.

Looking to put their week one loss to the LA Galaxy behind them, the Timbers now face a Red Bulls side fresh from mid-week CONCACAF Champions League play where they beat Club Tijuana 2-0 on the road. Just how the Red Bulls will prioritize today’s match with the CCL return leg coming up on Tuesday is anyone’s guess, but even a heavily rotated New York squad will test the Timbers as continue to come together under new coach and former New York Metrostars legend Giovanni Saravese.

With Diego Chara still out of the 18 as he builds up his match fitness, there are plenty of opportunities for the Timbers to change things up and for new arrivals to make their marks. Coming in to this match, young players like Cristhian Paredes, Marco Farfan, and Andy Polo all have something to prove, while the team’s veterans will need to step up if the Timbers are going to make their mark before March runs out.

Previews

Scouting Report: “Regardless of who the Red Bulls throw out there on Saturday, however, they’re very likely to look a lot like the Red Bulls. No team in MLS vertically integrates their academy, USL affiliate, and first team as well as the Red Bulls.”

Preview Interview: “Kaku was brought in to fill the play-making gap created by Sacha’s absence. He’s a 23-year-old Argentine playmaker with more than 100 pro games under his belt already. By RBNY’s standards, he was a massive investment: $6.25 million in transfer fees and expenses, per some reports. He’s here to win games for us from the get-go.”
