Another excellent sleuthing job by Bob Kellet found a report from a Jamaican publication, which states that the Portland Timbers have come to terms with Portmore United for the services of Alvas Powell. According to the report, the transfer fee was $100k and is the highest fee ever paid for a Jamaican player moving to MLS.
According to the article, the interest in Powell from European teams gave Portland that much more incentive to obtain Powell's rights and secure his services.
"A few (European) clubs had expressed interest in the lad, which is not surprising given his perceived upside," Wallen told The Gleaner in an interview.
''He has become a vital player in the Timbers' playing system, which has accelerated his development. As such, they were keen not to lose him at this stage," added Wallen.
