Saplings at School (Week 1)

College soccer is back and after a long time away Sapling Snapshots are back, but strictly looking at the former Timbers Academics on Division 1 campuses.

First, a couple of notes on some of the Saplings. Second, a rundown of the last week (using Monday as the end of the week). Lastly, as close to a "Best XI" as possible over the last week for the Saplings.

Akron is down to two former members of the Timbers Academy, as Jesse Garcia-Aguilar has returned home and is now with Oregon State. Akron still retains the services of outside back Niko de Vera and forward/midfielder Anthony Macchione. Garcia-Aguilar is one of two Saplings to transfer to another Division 1 program, with junior goalkeeper Collin Partee heading to Loyola Marymount after two seasons with Utah Valley.

Of note, Xavier has added two Timbers Academics to its squad in goalkeeper Zachary Nelson and defender Samuel Buzzas. I'm going to call Buzzas a "Freshman to Watch" from the Academy. Buzzas joined the Timbers Academy out of Bend and is a 6-foot-4 defender who is strong in the air and was also recruited by Stanford and Clemson. It'll be interesting to see how much time Buzzas gets on the pitch in 2016, but he is certainly one to watch.
